Mean Green Outdoor Preview: Distance
3/16/2021 9:00:00 AM | Track & Field/XC
DENTON – The last time North Texas track and field competed outdoors was back on May 15, 2019, during the NCAA West Preliminaries. Twenty-two months later, the Mean Green are ready to hit the track and field to pick up where they left off.
This week we will highlight each one of the event groups (distance, throws, sprints and jumps) leading up to the outdoor season opener March 20 at the TCU Invitational.
The Mean Green distance group is directed by the 2018 Cross Country Conference USA Coach of the Year Kevin Williams.
"We are looking forward to outdoor season, and for a lot of our athletes it will be their first opportunity to race this semester," Williams said. "This winter we dealt with a lot of health issues, but both the men and women are training well now."
In the fall, juniors Alec Esposito and Caleb Bouchard along with sophomore Erika Barrett each received all-conference honors at the 2020 C-USA Cross Country Championships.
"For the men, we have great leadership in the older runners. We expect Caleb Bouchard, Alec Esposito and Matthew Morgan to all have big outdoor seasons," Williams said. "For the women, Erika Barrett is back to training and looking good which is exciting after the fall she had. The women overall are still very young. Most of them have not competed outdoors since high school, so it is exciting to see what steps they can take."
