DENTON – North Texas track and field is coming off an impressive showing from the throwers at the 2021 Conference USA Indoor Championships, and the group returns three outdoor school record holders in Zion Hill (javelin), Jaleisa Shaffer (shot put) and Haley Walker (discus).
"We are definitely excited to compete outside again after missing a year and seeing some long throws," North Texas throws coach Brendon Kelso said.
Chris Samaniego returns to outdoor competition as a 2021 Indoor First Team All-Conference shot putter and Third Team weight thrower. Kendal Maples and Macayla Needham each earned honors on the third team for shot put, while Shaffer grabbed second team accolades.
"We had a strong season indoors and have gone back to work the past few weeks to pick up where we left off and have an even better outdoor season," Kelso said. "We have multiple throwers who have the potential to score big points at our outdoor Conference USA Championships, qualify for the NCAA Championships Preliminary Round and even advance to the final."
The last time North Texas track and field competed outdoors was back on May 15, 2019, during the NCAA West Preliminaries. Twenty-two months later, the Mean Green are ready to hit the track and field to pick up where they left off.
This week we will highlight each one of the event groups (distance, throws, sprints and jumps) leading up to the outdoor season opener March 20 at the TCU Invitational.
