DENTON – For the first time in 43 years, the Mean Green volleyball team defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) on Wednesday night at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
North Texas finished the season 2-1 against Big 12 opponents, including a 2-0 record at home against Big 12 foes. UNT also snapped a 16-match losing streak to the Red Raiders dating back to 1978.
"I thought we played really well today," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "There are still some things to work on, but overall, I thought our girls came out ready to play. We schedule these Big 12 matches in between our conference matches just to see where we are at in the season. Anytime you can win against an opponent from a Power 5 conference, especially in our region, we're excited about it."
Henrianna Ibarra, who surpassed 500 career digs on the evening, led the Mean Green defense with 21 digs and an ace. Both Ibarra and sophomore libero Aleeyah Galdeira have over 500 digs in their second seasons with UNT.
Rhett Robinson, who entered the night ranked 10th in the country in total kills, headlined the Mean Green offensive attack with 12 kills and tallied two blocks.
Sarah Haeussler and Miranda Youmans both displayed an efficient night for the Mean Green middle blocker duo. Haeussler finished with eight kills, three blocks and a .583 attack percentage, while Youmans tallied seven kills, three blocks and team-high .600 hitting percentage.
In the opening set, both UNT and Texas Tech battled back-and-forth until an ace from Valerie Valerian capped off a 25-23 win in the opening set.
Early in the second set with the Red Raiders leading 2-1, senior outside hitter Barbara Martin dove in the backcourt to save the ball before getting to her feet and running across the court to block a Texas Tech shot that made all of the Mean Green faithful rise to their feet.
Martin, who played in her 99th career match on Wednesday, finished with nine kills, 11 digs and two blocks.
"It was pretty awesome after it all ended," Martin said of her hustle play. "I was just recovering for my teammates, and I was determined not to let [Texas Tech] get a kill. I just went all out."
After Haeussler capped off the second set with a solo block of her own, the Mean Green dominated the third and final set 25-17 for the sweep over the Red Raiders.
Up Next: North Texas will travel to Southern Miss on March 21-22 for the season's most important matches of the year. A sweep against the Golden Eagles gives the Mean Green a chance to advance to the Conference USA tournament.
