UNT excited for crucial series at Southern Miss

DENTON – The Mean Green volleyball team will wrap up C-USA play this weekend with back-to-back matches at Southern Miss on Sunday, March 21 at 12 p.m. and Monday, March 22 at 11 a.m.
About the Mean Green: The Mean Green enter this weekend's meetings with the Golden Eagles on a three-match win streak. North Texas most recently swept Texas Tech 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) on Wednesday night.
UNT (9-9, 4-6 C-USA) currently sits in fifth place in the Conference USA West Division. With the top four teams in each division advancing to this year's C-USA Tournament, North Texas will need two wins against Southern Miss (9-6, 4-4) to keep its postseason hopes alive.
Rhett Robinson leads Conference USA and ranks No. 7 in the country with 290 kills in 2020-21. Robinson has recorded double-digit kills in all but three of the Mean Green's 18 matches this season.
Kaliegh Skopal, who needs just 17 assists to jump into the Top 10 in program history for career assists, ranks 17th in the country with 635 assists this season.
Henrianna Ibarra, who has started at libero for the Mean Green the past several weeks, has started to round into form as of late. Ibarra recorded 21 digs in just three sets against Texas Tech and has 200 digs on the season. Both liberos on the roster, including sophomore Aleeyah Galdeira, have surpassed 200 digs on the season.
Milestones to watch: Valerie Valerian is two kills away from moving into fifth in program history in career kills (1,333)…Valerian also needs just two digs to tie Amy Henard for the sixth-most digs in program history (1,076)…Kaliegh Skopal needs 17 assists to move into the Top 10 in program history for career assists (1,542)…Sarah Haeussler needs seven kills to set a single-season career-high in kills (110).

Southern Miss ranks third in the league in team digs with 15.91 digs-per-set. Libero Madison Lowler is third in C-USA with 4.55 digs-per-set. However, the Golden Eagles rank 10th in hitting percentage and seventh in kills.
Series history: North Texas has won the last five meetings with Southern Miss. The Mean Green lead the all-time series 9-7, including a 4-1 record at home and 4-3 record on the road. The last time these two teams met in 2019, UNT swept the season series.
