DENTON – Following the most successful showing in program history at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships a month ago, the North Texas track and field sprinters are looking to continue their achievements and accomplishments into the 2021 outdoor season.
Antonio Delacruz became the first Mean Green ever to be honored as a two-time C-USA champion with his victories in the 60 and 200-meter dash and was the High Point Scorer of the Meet at the indoor championships.
Samir Williams, Karlington Anunagba and Jared Johnson also placed in the 60, while Davonye Jones and Williams each earned points in the 200.
Joseph Squire improved upon his own North Texas record in the 60-meter hurdles while claiming the indoor title.
"I'm really anxious to see if the men's sprint group can carry the energy and success that we had indoors to our outdoor season," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "We have looked pretty good in the latest training cycle, and we're coming out healthier since the indoor championships. We want to continue to improve our times and be consistent with our preparation for the championship part of our schedule (May – June). We hope to have a large number of our sprinters competing during that time. Two years ago, the men's team missed going to the national championship finals by .01 seconds. We are not going to let that happen again."
Lyric Choice clinched second place in the 60-meter hurdles, and Monica Johnson notched fifth.
"The women's team will continue to grow," Sheffield said. "We have some individuals that should continue to drop big times as we go through the month of April. Our younger women sprinters are becoming more confident in their training and we should see some good things later in the season.
"Aneesa Scott is returning from injury and should hopefully make a positive return outdoors. We are hoping that Lyric Choice will make big leaps in improving her 100-meter hurdle times."
"I think both our men's relays (4x100 and 4x400) should see some best all-time season performances," Sheffield said. "Antonio DeLaCruz will pin his name high on the all-time best lists in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Joseph Squire should continue to lower his school record. Freshmen Clayton Boyce and Jordan Coates-McBride could hit their strides in the 400-meter and 400-meter hurdles, respectively.
"We had a good fall base preparation and winter competition season. With the success that most of the sprinters had indoors they are looking forward to more opportunities outdoors to compete and lower their times. They have really bought into understanding their event as it relates to them personally and physically. Their day-to-day mindset has been more focused than it has in the past. They must now trust themselves, their teammates and the foundational process that we have laid down to see the success of their hard work."
This week we are highlighting each of the event groups (distance, throws, sprints and jumps) leading up to the outdoor season opener March 20 at the TCU Invitational.
