AUSTIN, Texas – North Texas track and field opened the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
"It wasn't a bad day," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "For some it was their first individual competition of the year. We were able to get some progress out from some of our events."
Zion Hill was the high finisher for the Mean Green on the day with a 59.03-meter throw in Section B of javelin to conclude ninth. The other UNT field event competitor, Haley Walker, threw 52.76 meters in weight throw to finish 18th.
On the track, Davonye Jones clocked a 21.14 in the 200-meter dash, and Jared Johnson was timed in 21.51 seconds, while Aneesa Scott turned in a 24.29 in her race.
"Davonye Jones was probably the highlight of the afternoon in his first outdoor race at 200m in over a year, and he set a lifetime best. Jared Johnson also clocked a career-best as it was his first collegiate 200m race," Sheffield said.
Jordan Coates-McBride ran the 400-meter hurdles in 54.72 seconds, and Clayton Boyce completed the 400-meter dash in 49.04. Alec Esposito wrapped up the day for UNT in the 1500-meter run in a time of 3:56.90.
"Tomorrow should be another good day," Sheffield said. "Haley Walker returns for best event in discus. She had a so-so day in the hammer today. Jaleisa Shaffer should do well in the shot put. We bring the men's pole vaulters out tomorrow morning under hopefully, ideal conditions. Then the sprints and relay take the track tomorrow afternoon. The men's 4x100m relay has an opportunity to make some early season noise as well. I look forward to seniors Joseph Squire and Lyric Choice opening up the season in the hurdles. We have had some really good training sessions over the past month."
The Mean Green continue competition at the Relays beginning at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
