WACO – North Texas track and field competes in the annual Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium Friday and Saturday.
The meet is comprised of several teams ranked by the USTFCCCA. The men's field includes competitors from No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 9 Iowa State, No. 16 Kansas, No. 21 TCU and No. 23 Baylor. On the women's side, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 8 Texas Tech and No. 19 Kansas State will all be represented.
"It's an Olympic year, and the Michael Johnson Invitational is also open for unattached athletes," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "Saturday's evening session will be full of people looking for qualifying marks. Our best people will be slated for the evening session, which they have drawn heats, according to performance marks. Our best athletes will be with better athletes in the evening session, so it's going to be good.
"It's a good meet because there's around 15 teams coming, and half of the Big 12 is going to be there. A lot of northern schools that are looking for warmer weather meets are coming down. I want my team to race where the competition is very high. This is our last big push before conference, and it will take a couple of weeks to try to figure out the conference team."
Field events begin Friday at noon with the 1500-meter run starting at 7 p.m. followed by the 5k. On Saturday, field events commence at 10 a.m. and running events at 1:30 p.m.
