UNT Places Three, Prepares 12 for Finals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – North Texas track and field garnered a trio of placings and qualified a dozen Mean Green for Sunday's finals at the 2021 Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
In women's discus, North Texas racked up 14 points with a runner-up finish from Haley Walker on a mark of 48.71 meters and a third-place finish on a career-best toss from Jaleisa Shaffer at 48.66 meters.
Jack Beaumont ran a personal record 8:56.40 in the 3000-meter steeplechase to secure sixth place, and Victor Neiva also had a career day for eighth place in a time of 9:34.46.
The Mean Green men will occupy three of the eight spots in both the 100 and 200-meter dash finals on Sunday. In the 100 preliminaries, Davonye Jones ran his fastest 100 ever in 10.49 seconds to clinch second, Karlington Anunagba was third in 10.57, and Jared Johnson was fifth in 10.60. Jones will also make an appearance in the 200 final alongside Heronn Harrison, Jr.
Monica Johnson and Lyric Choice each advanced to the 100-meter hurdles finals. Johnson was sixth in a time of 14.18 seconds, and Choice was right behind her in 14.30. Joseph Squire also grabbed the eighth and last spot to compete for the title in the 110-meter hurdles with 14.17 seconds showing.
Braden Lange clocked a personal record in the 1500-meter prelims in 3:52.67, and Alec Esposito finished in 10th in 3:57.16 to each earn a spot in the finals.
Jordan Coates-McBride ran his best time in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles in 53.68 seconds to finish seventh for a spot in the finals.
The Championships conclude Sunday with field events at 1 p.m. and running events at 4 p.m.
