Program-High Four Selected All-Academic

DALLAS – North Texas track and field continued its record-setting season, this time in the classroom, with a program-best four Mean Green being named to the 2021 Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic Teams in Bailey Ashmore, Caleb Bouchard, Logan Mitchell and Chris Samaniego, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Ashmore is now a two-time recipient as the pole vaulter was also acknowledged in 2018. A graduate student with a 4.0 GPA in Materials Science and Engineering, Ashmore most recently placed eighth at the C-USA Outdoor Championships and won the title at the Aggie Invitational with a season-high height of 3.91 meters. During the indoor season, the Cypress native finished third at the C-USA Indoor Championships. Ashmore was selected as the Female Indoor Athlete of the Week January 27, captured first place at the Kansas State Wildcat Invite and vaulted an indoor season-best 4.01 meters at the Texas Tech Invite for runner-up honors. Ashmore is a Dean's List, C-USA Honor Roll and C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal honoree.
Bouchard adds another academic distinction alongside his two C-USA Cross Country All-Academic selections in 2019 and 2020. The Byron Nelson product carries a 4.0 GPA as a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with minors in Mathematics/Biological Science and Chemistry. Bouchard clocked a career-best 3:57.76 in the 1500-meter run for seventh place at the North Texas Classic this spring. At the H-Town SpeedCity Series, he captured first place in the 3000-meter run and ran a personal best 14:47.20 in the 5k for third place at the UT Arlington Invite. Bouchard has been named to the President's List, C-USA Honor Roll and is a recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
Mitchell was also selected to the C-USA Cross Country All-Academic Team last fall. A sophomore Psychology major with Philosophy minor and 4.0 GPA, Mitchell registered a career-best 3:57.55 in the 1500 for sixth place at the North Texas Classic, finished first in the 3k at the Kansas State Wildcat Invitational and ran a personal best 8:41.58 in the 3k for fourth place at the H-Town SpeedCity Series I. The Keller native is a President's List, C-USA Honor Roll C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal beneficiary.
Samaniego most recently placed third in shot put and fifth in hammer, respectively, at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. The junior from Monahans has a 3.728 GPA in Kinesiology with a history minor. Samaniego is the 2020 C-USA Indoor Shot Put Champion and bronze medal winner in weight throw with a personal record toss of 18.25 meters. He threw a personal record 16.89 meters in shot put and a career-best 56.56 meters in hammer for a pair of runner-up finishes at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight. Samaniego earned four first place finishes in shot put in 2021 and was the C-USA Indoor Athlete of the Week January 21. He has made the C-USA Honor Roll, President's List and Dean's List.
The previous UNT high stood at three all-academic selections, earned during the 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2014 seasons.
