KISSIMMEE, Florida — The bracket for the 2021 ESPN Events Invitational has been announced and the Mean Green men's basketball team will face Kansas in the opening round on Nov. 25.Â
The eight-team tournament will be held Thanksgiving weekend at HP Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida.Â
The 2021 ESPN Events Invitational, a bracket-format tournament, will feature 12 games over the three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game Sunday, Nov. 28.
All games will air on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU. A schedule for the tournament is below.
The Mean Green are coming off a historic 2020-21 season where they won the Conference USA Championship title and earned an automatic bid into the 2021 NCAA Tournament. It was the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010. At the 2021 NCAA Tournament, North Texas upset Purdue 78-69 (ot) in the first round for the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. This season UNT returns six from last season's champion squad including starters Thomas Bell and Mardrez McBride. Head coach Grant McCasland enters his fifth season at the helm of North Texas and has compiled a 79-51 record while in Denton. He has led the Mean Green to the 2018 College Basketball Invitational title, the 2020 C-USA regular season title and the 2021 C-USA Tournament title along with the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win.
This will be only the second time North Texas and Kansas have met. They last played on Nov. 19, 2010 in Lawrence, Kansas, when the Jayhawks were ranked No. 7 in the nation. Both KU and UNT reached the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Kansas won the 2014 ESPN Events Invitational.Â
Ticket information and travel packages will be announced later this summer. Fans can sign up on the event website for a pre-sale to guarantee first access and a $10 discount on all price levels. Travel packages, which include a discounted rate at the Gaylord Palms Resort as well as transportation to/from the arena, will soon be available via Anthony Travel.
