DALLAS — The North Texas soccer team's Allie Byrd and Sarah Fuller were named the Conference USA Offensive and Goalkeeper of the Week presented by Surf & Turf Golf, respectively, on Tuesday by the league.
The Mean Green (RV) shutout both of their opponents this past week and outscored them 5-0. Byrd scored three of her team's five goals including the late match-winner at Abilene Christian Sunday afternoon. Fuller led the defense to a pair of shutouts.
In Fuller's clean sheet against SFA on Friday, she made a pair of saves in a 3-0 victory. The fifth-year player from Wylie, Texas then followed up with another shutout in a 2-0 victory at Abilene Christian, her third road clean sheet of the season. The Mean Green are 5-1-2 overall, and Fuller is tied for the C-USA lead in goals against average (0.59) and leads the conference in shutouts with five shutouts.
Byrd opened the weekend with a goal and an assist in the Mean Green's 3-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin. She assisted on the first goal of the match, a perfectly-executed counter after a cleared corner kick. She took the clearance and found Olivia Klein for a UNT goal in the 7th minute. She then closed the scoring in the 52nd minute of the game with her third goal of the season. Sunday, in a 2-0 road victory over Abilene Christian, her two late goals broke open a 0-0 game. The junior from Kingwood, Texas scored in the 74th minute on a tap-in after a UNT corner kick, and in the 80th minute, she scored from 20 yards out into the opposite top corner of the net. Byrd leads the Mean Green and is tied for second in C-USA with five goals.
This is Fuller's first-ever conference player of the week honor and Byrd's second.
