CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Texas women's basketball team fell to Charlotte, 72-67 on Thursday night despite scoring 13 points off of 14 Niner turnovers. The game was decided at the free throw line, Charlotte went 24-of-25.
The offense clicked the best it had in C-USA play in a long time. Jaylen Mallard was doing it all early. Mallard led the way in rebounds with five with Madison Townley on the bench due to foul trouble. UNT led at the end of the first quarter, 19-14. It was the highest offensive output in conference play this season.
Amber Dixon eclipsed the 1,000-point mark as soon as she hit the floor. Charlotte was perfect from the free throw line in the first half, going nine-for-nine. To end the half, the Mean Green made five of its last seven field goals, but turnovers let the 49ers take a 35-33, advantage into the locker room.
The third quarter was all UNT. The tandem of Mallard and Townley picked a part the Niners zone defense with mid-range jumpers. Townley made her presence felt with eight points and pair of rebounds in the third frame.
In the fourth quarter, Charlotte made the winning plays to improve to 3-0 in Conference USA play. Mallard finished with her first double-double (13 points and 12 rebounds) of the season. Townley registered 12 points and seven rebounds. For only the second time this year, Quincy Noble did not notch double figures in the scoring column. Noble fouled out with little over a minute and a half to go. Jazion Jackson played a complete game scoring 12 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
North Texas (7-7, C-USA 1-3) will finish its road trip when they square off with Old Dominion on Saturday at 2:00 pm (CT). That game will broadcast on CUSA.TV.
