1/27/2022 9:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — A slow start didn't stop the North Texas men's basketball team from winning its sixth straight Thursday night as they beat Southern Miss 63-54 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The Mean Green were led by Mardrez McBride who tied his career-high with 21 points. Not far behind was freshman Aaron Scott who scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench for UNT (14-4, 7-1 C-USA). The win keeps North Texas undefeated in road games this season, marking the first time in program history they've began a year 4-0 on the road.
UNT has now won 12 of its last 13 overall.
"A gritty win," said head coach Grant McCasland. "it's hard to win on the road. But to have veteran guys like Thomas Bell, Mardrez McBride and JJ Murray, they carried us through it."
"Aaron Scott was tremendous off the bench," he added.
UNT trailed 10-0 to start the game, it's largest deficit in conference play so far this season. But UNT stuck together and tied the game 20-20 at the 9:40 mark in the first half.
They took a four-point lead at halftime and grew it to 11 late in the second half after going on a 9-0 run and holding USM to no points for over a six-minute stretch.
A late Golden Eagles (6-13, 1-5 C-USA) run made it stressful but McBride sank two late 3-pointers and had a perfect trip at the line to seal the victory for North Texas.
Sophomore Rubin Jones had 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds and seven assists in the win Thursday.
UNT travels to Louisiana Tech for a Saturday showdown with the Bulldogs who are tied for first place with the Mean Green in the league.
