Mean Green have 16 men’s and eight women’s individuals ranked in the C-USA top eight.
DENTON, Texas – North Texas Track and Field is set for its third meet in as many weeks as the Mean Green travel to Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech Open and Multis Friday and Saturday at the Sports Performance Center.
"This is one of the meets that we kind of pinned for highlighting our indoor season to get ready for conference," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "For the most part, we're only taking the people that we think will make up our conference team. We missed out on some entries due to how large the field is, but we may find other opportunities for them later on. It's a pretty big, competitive meet, and we're taking our best potential prospects."
UNT is the only Conference USA school represented in Lubbock in an elite field that includes host Texas Tech, ACU, Air Force, Arizona, Auburn, Boise State, Central Arkansas, Florida State, Incarnate Word, Kansas State, New Mexico JC, Northwestern State, Oklahoma, San Diego State, SFA, Tarleton, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UTA, Western Texas and West Texas A&M.
"It is one of the fastest tracks in the nation, and there will be people from all over the country there for that sole purpose," Sheffield said. "Qualifying for the national indoor meet is really competitive, so you want to find opportunities to compete against a lot of people at a high level. We're looking forward to getting good marks, but it's also an opportunity to compete before our conference meet at a high level. Knowing how well we do against this competition is a good benchmark for how well we can do in our conference."
UNT is ranked No. 22 in the initial USTFCCCA South Central men's regional rankings, while the women's team is ranked 32nd. The Mean Green have 16 men's and eight women's individuals currently ranked in the top eight of their respective events in Conference USA.
"We're just looking for consistency and improvement," Sheffield said. "We've been back together for three full weeks now, so our own individual competitors should be better just for being back with their coaches and training groups. If we can stay in our own lane and just focus on what we need to do to get better, then that just keeps us rolling towards the championship."
Live results from Lubbock will be provided by Prime Time Timing, and the meet will be streamed live on ESPN+ both Friday and Saturday.
