Alec Esposito placed second in the men’s 3,000 meters
DENTON, Texas – Alec Esposito finished as the runner-up in the men's 3,000 meters to lead North Texas Track & Field on the final day of the Texas Tech Open & Multis Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
"It was a good weekend," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "Our distance runners finished the day for us in pretty good shape. We had a lot of personal bests in the 3,000 meters."
Esposito recorded a time of 8:30.11 to finish second and lead a group of four Mean Green student-athletes in the top six of the 3,000 meters. Victor Neiva (8:38.41 – personal best), Caleb Bouchard (8:39.28) and Jack Beaumont (8:41.40) finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
"That was one of the things they wanted to do coming to Lubbock, really make a statement in setting up the 3,000 meters at the conference meet," Sheffield said. "I think they met our expectation there. A couple guys in the mile came back and paced them through that first 1,000 of the 3,000, so I think it went well for us."
The men's pole vault duo of Cody Bullard and Brock Hottel tied with a mark of 16-4 ¾ (5.00m), with Bullard edging Hottel for fifth place on misses.
"Those two guys are starting to figure things out, and it really speaks well to Coach (Fabien) Corbillon," Sheffield said. "They are both talented guys. They want to jump over high bars. They are both progressing toward really big jumps later on this season, so we're looking forward to it."
In the men's mile, Luke Canon took nearly five seconds off his indoor mile PR, clocking a time of 4:18.67 to finish eighth.
Erika Barrett took sixth in the women's mile, clocking a time of 5:11.86, and Laurynn Hogan recorded a personal best and a seventh-place finish in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:14.32.
"Laurynn's race was a lifetime best, indoor or outdoor, so that was a really good performance for her," Sheffield said. "She's been coming along. We're trying to figure out where she's going to be best, in the mile or the 800. She might be able to double back and do both. Just seeing her come back and do the 800 like she did really speaks a lot to the strength she has so far."
The Mean Green will be right back in Lubbock in two weeks for the Texas Tech Shootout, Feb. 11-12 at the Sports Performance Center.
"We saw a lot of what we needed to see this week," Sheffield said. "We'll take some people back that may need another chance to progress. We really want to take these next few weeks to get prepared for the conference meet. We'll take a medium-sized squad back to Lubbock, and hopefully those people can improve their standing on the performance list or try to find if they can do another event to help us as a team."
