Mean Green have 11 men and four women in the top-eight of their respective events
DENTON, Texas – North Texas track & field will compete in its final meet before the Conference USA Indoor Championships next weekend as the Mean Green travel to the Texas Tech Shootout Friday and Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
Â
"It's an important one," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "As much as we have finalized in our minds who our conference team is going to be, I think it's important for the ones that are going this week to get a little sharper. We're taking two or three others to get a chance to see if this is the right event for them to compete at the conference meet. It's just another chance to get better against better competition. We'll take a smaller group up this week, but it's a competitive group. I think it'll help them further prepare for next week's championship."
Â
UNT is up against another stacked field this weekend, including host Texas Tech, Angelo State, Baylor, BYU, Eastern New Mexico, Incarnate Word, Lubbock Christian, New Mexico JC, Northern Colorado, Northwestern State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Prairie View A&M, SMU, South Plains College, Tarleton, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas State, UNLV, UT Arlington, Wayland, Western Texas and West Texas A&M.
Â
"It's a nice competition the week before the conference meet," Sheffield said. "I like the high ends, and I like the middle group. I think we'll be as competitive as we were last week."
Â
Coming into the meet, the Mean Green have 11 men and four women in the top-eight of their respective events in the conference. Karlington Anunagba (60 meters), Luke Canon (800 meters), Cody Bullard (pole vault), Brock Hottel (pole vault) and Chris Samaniego (weight throw) all feature top-three marks in the conference.
Â
"To get people moved up on the performance list might be a confidence boost," Sheffield said. "When they see that they're in the top-10 or top-eight or top-five of the performance list in their event, I think that will help them at the conference meet. You want to feel good about what you're doing, so having this competition the week before can help them execute and perform."
Â
Live results from the Sports Performance Center will be provided by Prime Time Timing. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+ both Friday and Saturday.
