DENTON, Texas – North Texas women's basketball handed Southern Miss its fourth Conference USA loss of the season on Thursday night, 72-66. Quincy Noble tied her career-high in points with 30, going 12-of-24 from the field. Noble also set a new career-high in field goal attempts.
It was an up and down first half with the Lady Eagles owning the momentum for nearly 15 minutes. North Texas stormed back hitting three 3-pointers and all of its free throws. The Mean Green took a 38-34 lead into the locker room off a 16-1 run to close the half. Noble finished the first half with 13 points, it was also the 13th time this season she has notched double figures.
In the third quarter, Noble kept the offense afloat. Southern Miss opened the half with a 7-0 run to cut into the Mean Green lead but it wasn't enough. Chloe Callahan gave UNT quite the spark off the bench. The Canyon, Texas native, played an excellent 12 minutes, scoring five points, registering three assists, and a pair of rebounds.
It was a much-needed balanced scoring effort for the Mean Green as four student-athletes had seven or more points. Madison Townley and Noble led the team in rebounds with eight a piece. North Texas has now won three straight against USM, all of which have taken place at the Super Pit.
North Texas will finish its homestand against LA Tech on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CT). The game will broadcast on ESPN+.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"I'm really proud of our team. A lot of the things we talked about over the last week or two really showed up. Rebounding, energy, and contributions from the bench were huge for us tonight. The big run that we had to end the half was fueled by our defense. I felt as a team we put together 40 minutes; we can be proud of. Chloe was a game-changer tonight, her energy off the bench and just making plays was big for us. She was active and that's what we need."
KEEPING TABS
- Townley is No. 1 all-time in school history for most rebounds in a career (772).
- Townley is five games played from No. 1 all-time in UNT history (123).
- Mitchell is nine wins from the 100-career mark.
