DENTON, Texas – North Texas women's basketball dropped its final game of the Conference USA homestand to LA Tech (11-8, C-USA 3-5), 72-60 on Saturday afternoon inside the Super Pit.
It was a rough first few minutes for both teams out the gate. LA Tech took an early lead in the first quarter, but North Texas' offense caught up quickly. With Aly Gamez out, Preseason C-USA Player of the Year Quincy Noble has carried the offense like she did a year ago. Noble notched an efficient 15 points in the first half, shooting 50-percent from the floor. LA Tech transfer Amber Dixon brought it on both ends of the floor. Dixon had nine points, two rebounds, and a steal at the break. North Texas led the Lady Techsters 34-33 at half.
A high scoring third quarter was par for the course. Jaylen Mallard led the team in scoring with six points. The Lady Techsters closed the frame with a few buckets to take a 53-49 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, LA Tech made more winning play down the stretch. A four-minute scoring drought doomed the Mean Green. The Lady Techsters won the rebounding battle, 33-25. Noble finished with 23 points. It marks only the fourth time in her career she has registered back-to-back 20-point performances.
North Texas (8-9, C-USA 2-5) will hit the road for three game trip to take on UTEP (Feb. 3), UTSA (Feb. 5), and UAB (Feb. 7).
QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"I'm disappointed in the loss. Our defense didn't show up today and that's something we talked about as a team. I think offensively, we did pretty well, 44-percent from the field and we took care of the ball. I was hoping to get to the free throw line a little more, but the defense just wasn't good enough today."
KEEPING TABS
- Madison Townley is No. 1 all-time in school history for most rebounds in a career (778).
- Townley is four games played from No. 1 all-time in UNT history (123).
- Mitchell is nine wins from the 100-career mark.
