EL PASO, Texas – North Texas women's basketball dropped its second straight C-USA game on Thursday night against UTEP, 75-62. UTEP improved to 9-2 in the Don Haskins Center and UNT fell to 0-6 on the road.
In first quarter, the Miners came out firing and complemented that with stifling defense that turned UNT over five times resulting in 12 points. Jaylen Mallard hit a much needed three pointer to stop the 9-0 run by UTEP. It was her first career three in a North Texas uniform.
Jazion Jackson lit it up the second quarter. She finished the half with a team-high 10 points, two assists, and a rebound. The Mean Green cleaned up the turnovers only committing two in the second frame. Tommisha Lampkin gave UNT what it needed off the bench with four offensive boards in three minutes. Before the buzzer rang, UTEP hit a runner from just beyond the 3-point arc to take a 41-29 advantage into the locker room.
In the third period, North Texas cut the UTEP lead to six points off another Jackson 3-pointer. The next four and a half minutes didn't go as planned. UNT went scoreless as the Miners rattled off 15 straight. UTEP led by 18 entering the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Quincy Noble reached double figures for the 15th time this season. The McKinney native finished with 11 points. North Texas outscored UTEP, 21-16 in the fourth but it wasn't enough to overcome the third quarter woes. Madison Townley registered a team-high eight rebounds. Jackson fell one point shy of tying her career-high of 20.
North Texas (8-10, C-USA 2-6) will continue its road trip and look for its first C-USA road win at UTSA (Feb. 5) and UAB (Feb. 7). Both games will start at 2 p.m. (CT).
