DENTON - The UNT women's golf team has a new full-time assistant coach, as head coach Michael Akers announced the hiring of Emma Edwards to replace former assistant Lindsey McCurdy, who was hired prior to the 2020-21 season and left to further pursue professional golf before this season began. The team played the fall season with recent graduate Lauren Cox serving as a part-time assistant coach and Akers' brother, Scott, filling a role as a volunteer assistant. Cox will now serve in that role while continuing to pursue a professional career after earning partial status on the LGPA Symetra Tour in the fall.
Edwards, a Texarkana, Texas, native played collegiate golf at New Mexico before playing professionally on the Women's All-Pro Tour, where she has notched four top-15 showings including a second-place finish at the 2019 WAPT Riverbend Classic. She also has caddied for several friends playing on the Symetra Tour. Edwards graduated Summa Cum Laude with a nutrition degree from New Mexico in 2019 after lettering four years and earning a full scholarship after starting her career as a walk-on. She won the 2018 Arkansas Women's Amateur, and her best finish in a college event was a T13 at the 2019 PING/ASU Invitational.
"From the moment I walked in for the first time, I knew I was going to love this place," Edwards said. "All the love and care that was put into making this team successful made me want to learn and help continue that trend. With my background in nutrition and playing professional golf, I hope to bring my knowledge and past experiences to help the team grow as athletes, students and advocate to be healthier individuals, as well. I have Mike and a great group of girls that I am excited to work with and hope to bring in more wins and championship rings."
Akers said he is excited to finally have someone in place full-time after taking his time to find the ideal candidate while having full confidence in Cox as a coach during the fall season.
"I am excited to add Emma Edwards to our staff," he said. "We waited for the perfect fit to apply and found what we were looking for. Emma is a great player and worked very hard on her game. She was also an outstanding student when she studied at UNM. Those two things line up with what I preach in our program. Her nutrition background and being bilingual (in Spanish) also add new skills to our coaching staff."
The defending Conference USA champions begin their spring season in New Orleans at the Tulane Classic Presented by Chad Brownstein on Feb. 13-15.
