DENTON — The Mean Green men's basketball team's six-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night as North Texas fell 69-63 to UAB at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green were outscored 15-1 on second chance points and made three less free throws than the league favorite Blazers.
"Give credit to UAB they did what they needed to do to win," said head coach Grant McCasland. "They attacked the paint and got second chance points. We knew we had to rebound well to win. I felt like we had a chance there at the end but we didn't make winning plays."
With less than 2:15 left in the game, UNT (8-4, 1-1) trailed by just two points. A missed jumper by UAB (13-3, 3-0) was batted out by the Blazers' big man Trey Jemison to his guard Jordan Walker who stepped in a sank a second-chance bucket to increase the lead to two possessions. A missed three on the other end by North Texas turned into two more points for UAB essentially sealing the win.
"We didn't make the plays late," said senior guard Mardrez McBride. "We got away from attacking the paint and got comfortable with shooting 3-pointers. We know we're a good team and we know we have another important opportunity in front of us Saturday."
North Texas took multiple leads in the second half after trailing by one point at halftime, the first time they've trailed at half in seven games. However, they could never increase their lead in the second half to more than one possession.
McBride led the way for North Texas with a game-high 17 points. It ties his season-high. He was 4-of-7 from deep.
North Texas will be back in action Saturday when they host Middle Tennessee (9-5, 0-1) at 5 p.m. CT from the Super Pit.
