Conference USA Opener at Middle Tennessee on Sunday
1/7/2022 9:13:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team will travel to Murfreesboro to square off with the Middle Tennessee Lady Raiders . The game is slated for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (CT) inside the Murphy Center and will broadcast on CUSA.TV. Zac Babb will have the call on KNTU 88.1 FM.
It's been an uncertain few weeks for the Mean Green as they've had three out of their last four games either canceled or postponed due to Covid-19 issues within the opposing programs. Getting back into a rhythm will be crucial to getting the conference slate started on the right foot.
North Texas (6-4) had an up and down start to the non-conference season. UNT lost three of its four games by a total of 10 points and played a competitive, rescheduled game against No. 10 Baylor. All was not lost though, UNT throttled crosstown rival SMU and won its Holiday Classic Tournament at Cal Poly.
For Saturday's game, the Mean Green will have to play to its strengths to upend the Lady Raiders. Aly Gamez has been consistently good for a month a half now; she has registered double figures in six out of the last seven games. Preseason C-USA Player of the Year Quincy Noble has notched 10-plus points in all but one game this season. The 3-ball and defense will be the keys to the game for both ball clubs to get the victory.
North Texas will begin its C-USA homestand next week when they host Marshall (Jan. 13) and Western Kentucky (Jan. 15) in the Super Pit.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"I think we need to defend the 3-point line and win the rebounding battle to get the victory on Saturday. Limiting Courtney Whitson is important to us because when she's good, Middle is too. We've had a lot of time off with two of our first conference games getting postponed so it's good to be back and playing. We'll be ready for Sunday."
