MIAMI — The North Texas women's soccer team beat FIU in Miami Thursday night, 3-1, behind three first half goals.
With Thursday's road victory, UNT now has 13 points in the league standings and moves into third place with three regular season matches to go. They are just two points behind first place at the time of the end of Thursday's match.
"Obviously I love the goals that Allie, Summer and Alexis scored in the first half but without our bench tonight I'm not sure what the score would have ended up being," said head coach John Hedlund. "They played like warriors tonight and kept FIU's potent offense in check. They were a big reason why we won this game tonight. We will rest up and get ready for our home game on Sunday."
North Texas (8-5-2, 4-2-1) has now won 20 matches all-time over FIU (2-7-3, 0-4-3) in just 25 meetings. UNT hasn't lost to the Panthers in over a decade.
Byrd got the goal scoring started Thursday off an excellent counter through-ball from junior Madi Starrett to the streaking Byrd who used her body to shield off the FIU defender and beat the keeper.
The goal was Byrd's 20th career goal and fifth career goal at FIU in just two career matches in Miami.
In the 36th minute freshmen Kat Burnell and Summer Brown connected on a goal to put UNT up 2-0.
Burnell controlled the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and found her fellow classmate to the right, open for a clean look at net, which she put away.
The goal was Brown's third of the year and the assist was Burnell's second this season.
Just three minutes after Brown's goal, midfielder Avery Barron found a wide-open Alexis Truitt who only had to beat the keeper, which she did with ease.
The goal was Truitt's first career goal at UNT. She transferred to North Texas this summer from Sam Houston State where she scored two goals last season.
Barron, also a newcomer, now has three assists on the year.
Next up for UNT, they return home on Sunday to host UTSA at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
