EL PASO — The North Texas soccer team won its third consecutive match with a 1-0 road victory at UTEP Sunday afternoon.
The Mean Green scored the match's lone goal in the sixth minute off the foot of junior Devyn Flannery. The forward received a pass from midfielder Taylor Tufts and then buried the shot into the lower-left corner of the net. Tufts and junior Madi Starrett were credited with a double assist on the goal.
Flannery has now played in three career matches versus UTEP and has scored three career goals.
"This is always a tough place to play for anyone especially dealing with the altitude, heavy wind and trying to play on turf," said head coach John Hedlund. "Credit UTEP, they played hard today and never quit. We know as a team it wasn't our best game but like I told the team, 'championship teams find a way to win these games on the road' so I'm really proud of all of them coming through today and getting the win."
UNT (10-5-2, 6-2-1) outshot the Miners (4-10-3, 1-6-2) on Sunday, 16-4.
After the win, North Texas is now 9-1-1 all-time versus UTEP and is on a 10-match unbeaten streak versus them.
During the Mean Green's current three-match winning streak, they have outscored their three opponents — all league opponents — by a combined score of 7-2.
Next for North Texas is the regular season finale. They host Louisiana Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
The Lady Techsters, who entered Sunday in fourth place of the league standings right behind the Mean Green, picked up a huge 2-1 victory over UAB who sits in second place.
While their position in the standings didn't change, with both UNT and LA Tech picking up wins on Sunday, that means their regular season finale matchup is a battle for a top three finish in the league. Furthermore, North Texas could move all the way up to second place with a win over LA Tech and a loss or draw by UAB who will be hosting first place and undefeated Rice earlier in the day on Sunday.
The 2022 Conference USA Championship begins Nov. 2 and is hosted by Charlotte. The league's top eight teams make the single-elimination tournament and there are no byes.
