Tan Leads UNT To Strong Opening Day In Mexico

CABO SAN LUCAS, BCS, Mexico - Graduate Audrey Tan fired a 2-under 69 to lead the way for the Mean Green on the opening day of the Battle at the Beach, and North Texas enters Round 2 of the tournament on Saturday in sixth place in a field loaded with 10 top-50 teams.
The Mean Green shot a 5-over 289 on Day 1 behind Tan's 69 and a 1-over 72 from senior Emilie Ricaud, while junior Shreya Pal and graduate Patricia Sinolungan rounded out the team's scoring with 3-over 74s.
North Texas is in great position after Day 1, three shots back of No. 23 Houston, four back of No. 17 LSU and No. 43 TCU and five back of second-place Vanderbilt, the 16th-ranked team in the nation. The Mean Green enter Day 2 ahead of No. 14 Arkansas, No. 20 Baylor, No. 35 Clemson, No. 50 Kansas and No. 7 Mississippi State.
Tan is tied for sixth after the opening-round 69, thanks to three straight birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes.
The Mean Green will be paired on Saturday with Houston, Arkansas and Baylor, with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m.
