CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Head coach Kristee Porter led North Texas volleyball to its third consecutive 3-0 win at Charlotte on Saturday. The victory is the ninth of the Conference USA slate for Porter, the most conference wins for a UNT first-year head coach since Ken Murczek in 2010.
UNT (15-14, 9-5) finished its regular season schedule with a sweep of the 49ers (11-15, 5-9), 25-22, 25-21, 25-23, and secured the No. 4 seed in the C-USA Championship on Friday.
"I am really proud of our team as it was the first time competing in Conference USA for the majority of our players and staff," Porter said. "Our team has progressed well over the course of the season and I'm excited to reset and go for three more wins next week."
Sh'Diamond Holly matched her season-high mark of eight total blocks, including four against C-USA kills leader Emani Foster. She recorded five block assists in the match to inflate her single season total to 117 which ranks third in the program history. Holly added five kills on 11 attacks for a .364 hitting percentage.
"Diamond is brilliant every match," Porter said. "She prides herself on her defense, blocking in particular, and works hard to make sure she contributes as much as possible. There isn't a night when she doesn't feel up to the challenge."
Treyaunna Rush led the match with 18 kills while also contributing five blocks. Andrea Owens had the largest output of the C-USA schedule, tallying six kills, two blocks and two digs. Funmi Oladapo was perfect at the net, dropping a season-high five kills on five attacks with a block all in the third set.
Set 1: Despite taking an 8-6 lead, UNT faced an uphill climb after the 49ers mounted a six-point rally. Down 21-17 late in the frame, the Mean Green fought its way back with an 8-1 run, led by a kill and three blocks from Holly to win the set at 25-22.
Set 2: Rush spearheaded the North Texas scoring, contributing in four of the opening five points of the set for an early 5-2 edge. UNT would tighten its grip with a 9-2 rally to widen the gap to 15-7. The Mean Green maintained its advantage for a wire-to-wire set victory, 25-21.
Set 3: North Texas would keep its opponent at arm's length, opening the third set with four unanswered points. Charlotte would not come within two points of the lead until the 17-15 mark of the frame which UNT would fend off with a pair of kills from Owens. A late three-point push held the lead for the Mean Green and propelled the visitors to a 25-23 win to claim the match.
Up Next: UNT are set to travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky for the C-USA Championship which begins on Friday. As the No. 4 seed, the Mean Green will open the tournament against the No. 5 seed UAB at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. North Texas won 3-0 against the Blazers on Thursday.
