CHARLOTTE — The North Texas women's soccer team's 2022 season came to an end Friday with a 2-1 loss to UTSA in the semifinals of the 2022 Conference USA Tournament.
The second seeded Mean Green (12-6-2), who entered Friday on a five-match winning streak, had its defense under attack for a majority of the first half, facing 10 Roadrunner (11-5-4) shots. They conceded the two UTSA goals both on set pieces and failed clearances in the match's first 31 minutes.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, North Texas poured on the attack in the final 45 minutes and looked more like themselves. They held the Roadrunners to just one shot on goal compared to the eight they faced in the first half.
Senior Madi Drenowatz headed in her eighth goal of the season in the 60th minute off a corner kick by her former high school teammate Taylor Tufts — her 10th assist of the year.
UNT continued to pepper the UTSA defense with shots and possession inside the attacking third but was unable to score the match-tying goal.
"Unfortunately we put ourselves in a hole giving them two early gifts but I love the fight the girls gave in the second half, cutting the lead in half and really going at them for 45 minutes," said head coach John Hedlund. "It hurts now, because we all wanted to add to our record eight C-USA titles with one more but I will say this team has been a joy to coach from our seniors to our captains to the leadership and bond these girls have for each other. Night and day from last year. The team should feel proud of finishing second in a very tough league and winning 12 games this year. We had a heck of a run."
Drenowatz and Allie Byrd, who are both seniors, led the way for North Texas with three shots each but the team only was able to get two shots on target as they fell in the semifinal round of the conference tournament they have won four times since joining the league in 2013.
