North Texas Athletics Hall of Famer Bill Brashier passed away Friday. He was 93.Â
Brashier was both a football player and a coach for North Texas, starting at defensive back for the Eagles from 1949-51. He still holds two records for the Mean Green, his 10 interceptions in 1951 and his 19 career interceptions have never been topped in over 70 years.Â
He later spent 11 years as an assistant football coach at North Texas under Rod Rust and Hayden Fry. As NT's defensive coordinator in 1978, his Mean Green unit led the NCAA in three defensive categories. Brashier went on to join Fry at the University of Iowa, where he was an assistant for 17 years.
Brashier was named to the North Texas All-Century team in 2013 as one of the 12 best defensive players in school history. Brashier was also a three-year Navy veteran.
He was born in Eastland, Texas, on May 30, 1929. Following a highly-successful high school career, Brashier came to Denton where he was a defensive back, quarterback and punter (1949-51). He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from North Texas.
