Anunagba tied the school record in the men's 60 meters with a time of 6.69
DENTON, Texas - Following his school record-tying performance in Lubbock, Karlington Anunagba has been named Conference USA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Â
"I think it's always important when our team is represented by an individual for their performance," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "I think it speaks to where the quality of our team is when you get rated like that in a conference like ours. It speaks a lot about him individually as a competitor."
Â
Anunagba tied the school record in the men's 60 meters Friday at the Texas Tech Open & Multis, clocking a time of 6.69 in round one of the men's 60 meters to equal Keyth Talley's mark set in 2010. The junior from Lagos, Nigeria, earned a spot in the semifinals - where he was one of three that recorded a time of 6.73 looking for the eighth and final spot in the finals - but fell just short in the photo finish (6.727 to 6.729).
Â
"I thank God and I thank my coaches for putting me in the right spot to be in that position," Anunagba said. "I show up to practice, do my own part, and leave the rest to God."
Â
This is Anunagba's second-career C-USA Athlete of the Week award, as he took home the honor on April 14, 2021, as well. With an adjusted mark of 6.71@, he is ranked second in Conference USA with just over two weeks to go until the conference meet. Anunagba is also ranked fourth in the league in the 200 meters with a time of 21.56.
Â
"Our men's sprint group is very competitive, so for him to win that accolade is important for him as well as his teammates," Sheffield said. "It speaks to the level of training that we're doing. I'm really happy for him to win this award. I hope that it's something that pushes him to strive to be even better, because then it makes the whole team better. It's an important award, and I'm appreciative that he got it."
Â
The Mean Green will be back in Lubbock next weekend (Feb. 11-12) for the Texas Tech Shootout at the Sports Performance Center.
