NEW ORLEANS - The UNT women's golf team began its spring season on Sunday at the Tulane Classic Presented by Chad Brownstein and sit atop the leaderboard heading into Monday's second round thanks to standout days from junior Emilie Ricaud and sophomore Ellie Roth.
The pair shot two-over 74s at English Turn Golf & Country Club in some less than favorable weather conditions that featured blustery winds and wind chills in the 30s for the majority of the day.
"I'm proud of the way we managed the course in the very difficult weather conditions today," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Emilie really played well, and Ellie grinded. I feel 2-over today was equivalent to under-par on a normal day. You cannot win a tournament in the first round, but you can lose it. We are in a good position and look forward to trying to shoot better scores tomorrow."
Ricaud and Roth are both tied for third on the individual leaderboard, while seniors Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan are tied for sixth at 4-over par after shooting 76s. Freshman Sakura Sugiyama shot an 8-over and is tied for 27th after her first collegiate round, which featured an eagle on the Par 5, 516-yard second hole. Ricaud led the field with six birdies.
The Mean Green shot an even 300 as a team and will enter Monday's second round at 12-over par, leading tenth-ranked Michigan by eight shots and Conference USA foe UTSA, who is in third place at 23-over par.
UNT will be paired with UTSA and Texas State for Monday's second round and will begin teeing off at 9:08 a.m., from the first hole, beginning with Sugiyama and ending with Roth at 9:40 a.m.
