DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team won its eighth straight game with a 69-45 win over UT San Antonio Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit. The win improves the Mean Green to 9-1 in conference, which marks its best league start in program history.
UNT (16-4, 9-1 C-USA) held the Roadrunners (8-16, 1-10 C-USA) to 29 percent shooting Saturday as the Mean Green's Abou Ousmane, Tylor Perry and Mardrez McBride led the way for their team with a combined 45 points.
"Obviously proud of our team," said head coach Grant McCasland. "But there have been great teams before us who paved the way for us to accomplish this. And at the end of the day what's most important is winning championships."
"We were able to crash the glass tonight — hold them to just six second chance points — and make it really difficult on them to score," he added.
The Mean Green led wire-to-wire Saturday and attacked the paint all night. UNT attempted a season-low 11 total 3-pointers Saturday. It's previous season-low was 14 versus Drake on Nov. 28 in a 57-54 win. North Texas outscored UTSA by 20 points in the paint (34-14). The sophomore big-man Ousmane led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Senior Mardrez McBride carried North Texas through the first half. The guard scored nine straight points for UNT during a two-minute stretch that broke open the game into double digits. The Roadrunners never cut the deficit back into single digits after. McBride was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor Saturday.
"They're a tough team down low that plays physical," Ousmane said. "So beating them in that area was definitely going to be a key for us."
Junior Tylor Perry has come accustom to putting on a show. The UNT guard sank a first half buzzer-beating 3-pointer from distance. It was his second of two made 3-pointers. Perry finished Saturday with 16 points on five-of-nine shooting.
UNT has now won 14 of its last 15 games. They sit alone atop the Conference USA standings with its 9-1 record. Monday the Mean Green will welcome an equally hot UTEP Miners team to the Super Pit. UTEP has won five in a row headed into Monday. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network.
