FRISCO, Texas – Graduate guard Aly Gamez scored a career-high 29 points on 7-of-7 shooting from outside as North Texas women's basketball downed Old Dominion 65-58 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Conference USA Tournament Thursday at The Star.
"I'm really proud of our team today. Getting this win was huge for us," Head Coach Jalie Mitchell said. "Gamez was fantastic today and you could tell she has been in these situations before.
Gamez's career-best perfect 7-for-7 effort from beyond the arc are the most for a UNT player in the postseason, fourth-most in program history and one off the Conference USA tournament record set by UAB's Amanda Peterson in 2010.
The seven 3-pointers are the most for a UNT player since Terriell Bradley hit eight against North Dakota State in 2018. Gamez also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals. She scored 20 in the second half.
A tightly contested contest stood at 27-26 in favor of UNT (17-11) after end of the first half, then Gamez took over. After a layup by ODU's Iggy Allen, the graduate transfer from Irving sparked a 25-12 run with nine straight points as the Mean Green took a 55-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Allen led the Monarchs with 20 points.
ODU (23-9) held the Mean Green without a field goal in the final 6:44 and was able to carve the UNT lead down to six two separate times in the final 1:15 but would get no closer.
The victory is the ninth in the last 10 games for UNT. The Mean Green reach the conference semifinals for the first time since 2018. The win was the 100th for Mitchell as head coach.
Amber Dixon had 15 points and five rebounds. Madi Townley finished with a game-high 12 rebounds, her seventh game with 10 or more boards this season.
