North Texas Drops Heartbreaker in Semifinals

FRISCO, Texas – No. 2W North Texas (17-12) was seconds away from making the Conference USA Championship against top-seeded Charlotte (21-9) on Friday night at The Star. The 49ers advanced the finals with a 66-63 victory.
The 49ers held off a ferocious second half comeback from the Mean Green. UNT was down as many as 15 points with 6:25 to go in the third quarter.
In the final minutes of the game, Jaylen Mallard clutched up with two free throws and the North Texas defense got a steal on the next possession with a chance to tie at the buzzer. After a mad scramble with no timeouts left for UNT the last second 3-pointer was off the mark.
Aly Gamez and Quincy Noble tied with a team-high 15 points apiece. Jazion Jackson and Madison Townley also tied with a team-high seven rebounds, respectively.

"That's a tough loss. I thought we fought hard tonight as we have all season. We just came up short tonight and I think we could've found four more points somewhere in this game. I'm proud of how we battled back."
