Mean Green will compete in first full outdoor meet after opening with dual meet
DENTON, Texas – With a dual meet in the books, North Texas track & field will officially open up the outdoor season Saturday at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.
Â
"This is a great formal opening," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "With the number of teams that will be there and the competitiveness of it, it makes for a really good second meet for us. I'm glad we had the dual meet to get us ready. I think the level of competition steps up a couple of levels. We've had a good week of training. I think that with the teams there, it will be a great challenge for us as a team. They're not scoring the meet, but it will be really good for us to see where we are at the beginning of the season. We're looking forward to it."
Â
In addition to host TCU, North Texas will be battling against Baylor, Dallas International, Northwestern St., Oklahoma, SMU and UTA.
Â
"It makes for competition throughout with the Big 12 schools," Sheffield said. "It's going to be challenging to see where our relay teams and our sprinters are. I think from a field event perspective, those particular schools are going to be really good. For the distances, it's still kind of early in the year, but it's good to match up and see where we are. I think there are challenges all around for everybody to see where we are. The competition itself is good with those types of schools there."
Â
With a head start on the competition, the Mean Green currently hold a combined 60 spots in the top-three of the Conference USA event rankings.
Â
"We'll be a little closer to what we want to look like," Sheffield said. "We are still trying to find different events for athletes so we can round up our conference team. We want to see where we can find people that could possibly score in different events. I think our relay teams are going to be a little closer to what they may look like a month from now. The throwers are still throwing two or three implements to figure out which ones are going to be best. The distance runners aren't doing a lot of longer runs, but they're doing some of the shorter, faster runs to figure out who's going to be better later on. It takes them a little while to get their longer speed endurance under them. So, they're going to continue to build on that side."
Â
Live results from Lowdon Track And Field Complex will be provided by Flash Results Texas.
