Monahans, Texas product recorded a hammer throw of 192-8
DENTON, Texas – Chris Samaniego broke the school record in the hammer throw to lead North Texas track & field Saturday at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.
Â
"I was pleased with the day," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "I think expectations are really high when you know you have a good team, but you look at it and say, this is just the second track meet. I was really pleased with a lot of the outcomes."
Â
Samaniego continued his record-setting year, besting the UNT record in the hammer throw that had stood since 2013. The Monahans, Texas, native registered a toss of 192-8 (58.74m) to earn the top mark in school history.
Â
"Chris keeps moving it up there," Sheffield said. "He's taking the record to a new place, and it's going to get up to where it's a pretty high-caliber mark. It's going to be a really good marker for us as a program. I was excited for him. I think they're all doing really well in the hammer. Jake Parchman had a PR again, and Madison Sloan threw it pretty far. So, we're doing well."
Â
Jordan Coates-McBride had the lone win of the day for the Mean Green, clocking a time of 54.22 to win the 400-meter hurdles.
Â
"For Jordan to have two early-season victories in two weeks, speaks a lot to where his season is going to go," Sheffield said. "He's run as fast now than he did the whole month of April last year. My goal is to try to keep him focused, and just continue you to get better each week. But man, he's excited about where he think he can get to."
Â
In the men's 1,500 meters, Mason Garner ran a personal-best time of 3:54.51 to finish as the runner-up.
Â
Skyler Guillot placed third in the women's javelin with a throw of 137-02 (41.82m), and Nicholas Frazier-Davis took third in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-01.25 (1.86m).
Â
"For track & field, no matter what uniform, you still have to line up and meet some people," Sheffield said. "I think that when there are Big 12 schools there, it just heightens the level of performance. I think a lot of them stood up to it today."
Â
It's a quick turnaround for the Mean Green, as the Texas Relays are set to take place March 23-26 in Austin, Texas.
Â
"It'll be a short week for some of us that will go to Austin for the Texas Relays," Sheffield said. "We'll get out of here on Wednesday and Thursday to get ready for Friday's competitions, so it won't be a lot of training. Just recovery from this week and sharpening up some things that we can get ready for April.
Â
"April's a big month for us. Charlotte Kerr was jumping at a bar that was just a few centimeters under her personal best. It's the first time she's competed in over a couple of years, so that's another plus for the women's team to get her back. They're healthy. It's just continuing to get better every week and try to keep people healthy. We've got a long season ahead of us, so I hope that we can just continue to get better as a group."
