TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Audrey Tan put together a blistering final round at the MountainView Collegiate on Sunday afternoon to finish tied for third in an absolutely loaded field that featured 10 top-50 teams and two teams, including the Mean Green, ranked just outside the top 50.
Tan fired a 5-under-par 67 with the help of seven birdies on Sunday to finish the event tied with four other golfers at 8-under - two shots back of the winner, Arkansas' Kajal Mistry. Low scores were much harder to come by on Sunday than they were on Saturday, and the Mean Green managed to break par for the second straight day to finish eighth at 3-under par. UNT was one of just seven teams to break par on Sunday, shooting a 1-under 287 following Saturday's 3-under 285.
"It is great to break par again in the final round," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Audrey had seven birdies today, which is incredible considering the weather conditions. Overall, we beat some very good teams, and this finish should help our national ranking. We now have some time to get extra reps at Waterchase and prepare to host The Bruzzy."
UNT beat three top-50 teams: No. 29 TCU, No. 35 Iowa State and No. 46 UNLV, and finished just two shots back of No. 15 Arkansas.
Aside from Tan's stellar day, the Mean Green were led by sophomore Ellie Roth, who finished the event tied for 32nd at even-par, and in Sunday's final round, the team got 1-over 73s from Patricia Sinolungan and Marija Jucmane.
UNT will return to action next month when it hosts The Bruzzy on April 11-12 at Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth - the final tournament before the Mean Green look to defend their Conference USA Championship on April 18-20 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
