EL PASO — The North Texas men's basketball team's 15-game winning streak came to an end Saturday at UTEP with a 70-68 defeat to the Miners to conclude the regular season.
UNT (23-5, 16-2 C-USA) was down 17-2 to start the game and down 14 at the half but fought back by outscoring UTEP (18-12, 11-7 C-USA) 47-35 in the second half. However, they fell just short.
"UTEP came out physical and made tough baskets to start the game," said head coach Grant McCasland. "I love the fight of our group but we didn't give them 40 minutes of toughness."
North Texas was led Saturday by Thomas Bell who recorded his sixth career double-double finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds — seven of which were offensive rebounds.
(RV) UNT who sealed the Conference USA West Division title last week with a 56-49 victory over Louisiana Tech at the Super Pit heads into the 2022 C-USA Men's Basketball Championship in Frisco next and will play Thursday in the quarterfinals. UNT is the reigning champs.
"We just can't have starts like we did today," McCasland said. "But nothing has changed. I still love our fight and we're still the regular season champs. We know what we have to do next week in Frisco. We've done it before."
