DENTON — The North Texas women's soccer team beat Houston Baptist Friday night, 4-1, to improve to 3-0-0 on the year.
UNT got all four goals from four different players and junior Madi Starrett assisted on two of the four goals.
"We played a lot crisper in the second half," said fifth-year senior Olivia Klein." When we play clean we are a dangerous goal scoring team."
The Mean Green got the scoring first in the 23rd minute when junior Devyn Flannery was pulled down in the box for a penalty. Senior Madi Drenowatz converted the PK to give UNT the lead.
UNT took a one-woman advantage in the 38th minute after a HBU (0-1-1) defender was assessed a second yellow card.
Early in the second half North Texas went up 2-0 when Starrett delivered a perfect ball into the box for Klein who headed in her third goal of the season. She has scored in all three of the Mean Green's matches this year. It is the first time she has scored in three consecutive matches.
Quickly after HBU pulled within one goal, junior newcomer Rachel Roebuck scored maybe the goal so far of the young season when she vollied in a corner kick for her first goal of the year.
Freshman Kat Burnell put the match to bed in the 72nd minute when she scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Burnell becomes the first UNT freshman since UNT Athletic Hall of Famer Rachel Holden in 2013 to score four goals in the first three matches.
North Texas hits the road this weekend for its first road clash. UNT plays at SFA on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
