Mean Green sending all seven student-athletes to TCU
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (Sept. 21, 2022) – Coming off a strong opening weekend, the North Texas women's tennis team looks poised to compete in a big way in the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional hosted by TCU Thursday through Monday.
The tournament will be a chance for the Mean Green to showcase their talents as each individual will be looking to clinch a spot in the ITA Fall National Tournament.
"This is the biggest event of the fall for us," head coach Sujay Lama said. "The matches we were able to play this past weekend will certainly help us get off to a good start. We just want to keep building and developing with each opportunity that is in front of us."
Day one of the tournament will feature at 64-person field of players trying to qualify for the main draw on Friday as well as the doubles main draw.
The Mean Green will have a pair of doubles teams in the competition including Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais who come into the event as the #9 overall seed in the doubles draw. The other combination for the Mean Green will be Olivia Malm and Gloria Alogo Piqueras in the bottom half of the bracket.
The duo of Sophia Hummel and Kexuan Zhou will compete in the fall regional for the fourth straight year while Adams heads to the regional for the second time in her career.
Adams, who is coming off an impressive trip to the quarterfinal in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic last weekend, will look to build off her solid performance in 2021 when she advanced to the Round of 16 in the main draw of singles and found herself in the semifinal of main draw doubles with teammate Lucie Devier.
Zhou and Hummel, meanwhile, head into the competition after winning a pair of singles contests at the Boston Invitational last weekend. They will both be joined by Olivia Halvorsen in the singles qualifying round Thursday.
The quartet of newcomers, Morais, Alogo Piqueras, Halvorsen and Malm will all compete in the event for the first time.
The last and only time the Mean Green took home an ITA Regional title was in 2018 when the duo of Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze won the doubles title to advance to the ITA National Fall Championships.
