Four Mean Green players score in double figures in the loss
RUSTON, La. (Jan. 11, 2023) – The North Texas women's basketball team trailed by just two at halftime but were outscored 26-9 in the third quarter and were unable to come from behind late as they fell 81-66 against Louisiana Tech Wednesday night on the road.
The Mean Green had four players score in double figures for the second time this season as they fell to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in C-USA play.
Kendall McGruder led UNT with a career-high 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Aniyah Johnson, meanwhile, added 14 points, while Jaaucklyn Moore and Tommisha Lampkin chipped in 12 apiece.
LA Tech shot 64 percent from the floor and 58 percent from 3-point range to improve to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in C-USA competition.
In the first, both teams went back-and-forth early with neither team leading by more than three points in the first seven minutes of game action.
With the score 17-14 in favor of the Mean Green, LA Tech bridged the first and second quarters with 13 consecutive points to take a 27-17 lead just under a minute into the second.
UNT was able to climb back to within four after McGruder hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make the score 27-23.
After the Lady Techsters swelled the lead back to eight, the Mean Green answered with six straight points, four of which came from Noble, and headed into the locker room down by two at 37-35.
Coming out of the break, UNT was able to tie the game up on a pair of free throws from Aniyah Johnson at 37 apiece but were never able to re-take the lead.
Leading 43-41, LA Tech extended the lead back to double figures with an 20-3 run over the final 6:44 of the third quarter to take a 63-44 edge heading into the fourth.
The Mean Green were able to cut the deficit back down to 11 with seven straight points of their own, five of which came from Moore.
Much as they did throughout the contest, however, the Lady Techsters answered, this time with an 8-0 run to push the lead back to 19 at 76-57 with 4:09 left to play.
LA Tech was able to keep the Mean Green at arms-length the rest of the way, earning the 15-point victory at home.
As a team, UNT hit seven 3-pointers and shot 53.8 percent from downtown and had 18+ assists for the second straight game.
