Mean Green earn back-to-back 6-1 victories
FT. MYERS, Fla. (Jan. 14, 2023) – For the second consecutive day in Florida, the North Texas women's tennis team earned a dominant 6-1 victory, this time against St. John's to open the season with back-to-back wins.
The Mean Green won the doubles point and five of the six singles points to improve to 2-0 on the young season. UNT has now started the season 2-0 three times in the past four seasons dating back to 2019-20.
"As a freshman I really loved playing our first dual matches for UNT," Matilde Morais said. "The energy that we all had as a team was amazing, and I am super proud of what we have accomplished these past two days. I was especially proud of how we were able to come back from losing the doubles point on the first day and managed to maintain the positive energy. We didn't let that affect the fighting spirit our team is known for and continued to perform extremely well"
In doubles play, the combination of Kexuan Zhou and Gloria Alogo Piqueras took home a victory at line three for the second straight day, this time 6-3.
Moments later, Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais teamed up for a 6-4 win at line one to give the Mean Green the doubles point and a 1-0 advantage.
Adams continued her momentum into singles play as she was the first to grab a win for the Mean Green with a 6-2, 6-4 straight sets win at line one.
Olivia Halvorsen showed true resilience in her matchup at line five to earn the third point of the day for UNT. After sweeping through set one 6-0, the freshman found herself tied at 1-1 after dropping the second set 6-3. She bounced back, however, winning the third 6-4 and the match 2-1.
The decisive fourth point of the match game at line six where Zhou continued her hot start to the season. The senior from Changsa, China, won in straight sets for the second straight day 6-4, 6-3 and has yet to drop a singles or doubles matchup this season.
Morais and Alogo also both posted victories at lines two and three, respectively, for UNT to bring the final tally to 6-1.
Morais won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (10-6) while Alogo came back from one set down to earn her victory 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and remain unbeaten as well.
