HUMBLE, Texas - The UNT women's golf team played its first competition of the spring slate on Monday with a dual victory over Houston at The Golf Club of Houston's Championship Course, which will host the ICON Invitational on Feb. 27-28.
The Mean Green, who ended the fall schedule ranked 56th in the country, topped No. 27 Houston 6-1-1 in the match play event - the first time they've beaten Houston in a dual, which has become a constant in the early spring schedule since head coach Michael Akers' arrival.
The teams of Audrey Tan and Patricia Sinolungan and Emilie Ricaud and Sakura Sugiyama went 2-0 in their respective matches, while Shreya Pal and Mason Lewis went 1-1 and Ellie Roth and Mallorie Luitwieler went 1-0-1. One of the highlights on a day full of birdies for the Mean Green was a chip-in eagle on the eighth hole from Sugiyama to clinch the first match for her team.
Akers said he was happy to see his players respond to a competitive environment with their first tournament coming up Feb. 5-7 at the UCF Challenge.
"In just over two weeks, we fly to Orlando so it's good to get them in a competitive mode," Akers said. "We had some good practice, as well, in the days prior to today and it was really a good way to start the spring."
