Women’s Basketball Looking for Third Straight Home Win Saturday vs. UAB

DENTON, Texas (Jan. 19, 2023) – Coming off back-to-back wins in Denton, North Texas looks to push that streak to three when they return to the Super Pit Saturday afternoon to take on the Blazers of UAB.

It will be the 16th all-time meeting between UNT and UAB in a series that dates back to the 2000-01 season. The Mean Green hold a 10-5 all-time advantage in the series and have won each of the last four matchups between the two schools.

UAB comes into the matchup with a 9-8 overall record and are currently 1-7 in C-USA play. The Blazers started the season 7-1 but have gone just 2-7 since then and currently sit at the bottom of the conference standings. The lone league win for UAB came in early January at home against FAU.

Quick Hitters

Senior Quincy Noble leads UNT offensively with 17.3 points per game this season, a figure that is second Conference USA. Noble has scored in double figures 16 times this season for North Texas and ranks 10th in program history with 1100 points in her collegiate career.
Junior Tommisha Lampkin has been one of the top post players in the conference, sitting second in the league with 7.4 rebounds per game and fourth with 1.44 blocks per contest.
Ereauna Hardaway ranks sixth in C-USA with a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year. The freshman leads the Mean Green with 3.7 assists per game.
UNT has two of the top eight players in C-USA in blocked shots this season in Lampkin and Aniyah Johnson. Lampkin sits fourth in the league with 1.4 blocks per game while Johnson is eighth at 1.2 blocks per contest.
In total, the Mean Green rank third in the conference with 3.39 blocks per game as a team.
UNT has been one of the top teams in C-USA in distributing the basketball this season. The Mean Green rank second in the league with 14.75 assist per game in conference-only games this season.
In C-USA matchups, UNT has two of the top seven assist leaders in the league as sophomore Kendall McGruder and Hardaway are tied for sixth in the conference with 4.0 assists per game.
Through the first eight C-USA games this season, sophomores Kendall McGruder and Aniyah Johnson have turned their game to a new level. In conference-only games this season, both McGruder and Johnson are averaging in double-figures with McGruder scoring 13.6 points per game and Johnson averaging 11.4 points per contest.
McGruder ranks 11th in scoring, third in FG percentage, seventh in 3-point percentage, and sixth in assists per game in C-USA only contests.
Johnson is now averaging 6.9 rebounds per game in C-USA contests. That figure is tied for the fourth-most in conference-only games this season.
Through 16 games this season, the rebound battle has been an indicator of success for UNT. The Mean Green are 2-9 this season when losing the team rebounding battle and are 4-2 when outrebounding their opponents.

UNT leads the all-time series with the Blazers 10-5 and have won each of the last four matchups dating back to the 2020-21 season.
Prior to the current four-game win streak, UAB had a four-game stretch of wins of their own from 2018-20.

The Blazers have a pair of players averaging double figures thus far this season, including arguably the top freshman in the conference in Denim DeShields.
Through 17 games of her collegiate career, DeShields is averaging 13.4 points and 4.4 assists per game. Her assist numbers rank second in C-USA and are a strong reason why she has won C-USA Freshman of the Week three times already this season.
UAB is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the conference as well as Division I. The Blazers lead C-USA and rank sixth in the country with 9.3 made 3-pointers per game. They also have the top 3-point FG percentage shooter in the conference in Margaret Whitley (43.0 percent).
