Jaaucklyn Moore led UNT with 16 points
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team was handed its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling at Texas A&M, 74-55, inside Reed Arena.
The Mean Green were led by Jaaucklyn Moore's 16 points and DesiRay Kernal's 12 points. Both players have scored in double digits in all three games this season.
Despite outscoring Texas A&M in the second half, the Mean Green could not overcome the Aggies' hot start.
A&M jumped out to an early lead behind five 3-pointers in the first quarter to build a 29-13 advantage. The deficit got even larger for the Mean Green as A&M went on an 11-0 run to start the second quarter before DesiRay Kernal knocked down a 3-pointer to end the run and a scoring drought of over four minutes for North Texas.
Coming out of the half trailing 49-22, UNT went on a 5-0 run to start the half. Kernal hit her second 3-pointer of the game to start the scoring, while Desiree Wooten added five points of her own in the quarter.
North Texas would shrink the lead to as low as 12 with 2:09 left in the game after an 8-0 run late in the fourth quarter. A&M would seal the game from there, however, with a 6-0 run of their own.
North Texas looks to bounce back in the second of its five-game road stint at Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
On UNT's response in the second half:
"We showed some toughness today that we haven't had the opportunity to show yet. It's easy when you come out and get up 30 points to get mad about little things but you're still winning and the game is never in doubt. But how are you going to respond when you're down and it seems like the game is out of reach? I'm proud that in the second half we came out and didn't worry about the score, we just played basketball. That is what put us in a position to be back in the game and have an opportunity to close the gap. You just can't dig that big of a hole and expect to come out of it, especially against a good SEC team.
