Kernal records second double double of the season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team got back in the win column with a 78-55 road victory over Stephen F. Austin Thursday night.
Led by DesiRay Kernal's double double, the Mean Green picked up their first win in program history in Nacogdoches. In her second double double of the season, Kernal racked up 14 rebounds, including eight in the first half, to go along with 17 points. One of the nation's leaders in getting to the free throw line, Kernal went 13-of-13 from the charity stripe in the game. She is the first UNT player to shoot 100% from the free throw line with 13 attempts since Aly Gamez on Dec. 3, 2021.
North Texas found themselves in an early 19-10 deficit, but from there it was all Mean Green led by their defense.
A defense that ranked No. 12 in the nation in opposing field goal percentage coming into the game buckled down, holding the Ladyjacks to 2-of-15 from the field in the second quarter and 2-of-21 in the third quarter.
The Mean Green would go on a 20-4 run in the second quarter, but would only lead 30-29 at the break after an 8-0 run from SFA to close the quarter. Coming out of halftime, UNT would outscore SFA 24-6 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Dyani Robinson paced the Mean Green in the second half, ending the game with 15 points and six assists. Tommisha Lampkin also scored in double figures finishing with 13 and adding two blocks.
North Texas will have a short turnaround with its next game coming against Southern Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
On UNT's rebounding:
"Defensive rebounds mean we got a stop. There are very few times an SFA team shoots 28 percent in a game. I thought we came out and played defense well. Rebounding was a focal point for us because we've talked about the last couple games where teams come out and they're missing their first shot but getting an offensive rebound that leads to points. When we get a defensive rebound, it allows us to get the ball up the floor and I thought we did a great job of that today."
