
Mean Green Rally Behind Lampkin to Down Southern Illinois

UNT has five players score in double figures
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The UNT women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Southern Illinois, 79-73, Sunday in Carbondale, Illinois.
With the win, North Texas improved to 4-1 to start the season for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.
Led by Tommisha Lampkin's season-high 19 points and four other double-digit scorers, the Mean Green were able to overcome a 35-29 halftime deficit and hold off the Salukis late.
Coming out of halftime, the Mean Green outscored Southern Illinois, 23-10, in the third quarter. North Texas shot 75% from the field in the quarter, largely led by Lampkin who had eight points in the period. The UNT senior added two blocks in the game, which moved her past Jalie Mitchell into sole possession of seventh place on the program's career blocked shots list.
With Lampkin on the bench after fouling out early in the fourth quarter, Shamaryah Duncan, Desiree Wooten and Ereauna Hardaway stepped up down the stretch. Hardaway and Duncan posted their best performances of the season, which was needed to close out the Salukis. Hardaway had a season-high 12 points to go with five assists and three rebounds, while Duncan totaled 10 points.
North Texas sealed the victory in the final minutes hitting eight of its last nine shots. DesiRay Kernal was also clutch down the stretch going 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while finishing with 15 points in the game. Her lone miss snapped a streak of 22 consecutive made free throws.
Up next, North Texas heads to Hattiesburg, Miss., for two games at the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic. UNT will take on Samford on Friday at 1 p.m. CT and then conclude the event against North Dakota with tip set for 8 a.m. CT on Saturday morning.

"On the road it is tough to win. To have essentially three road games in seven days with a lot of travel, finding a way to win is big. We can learn a lot of things from this game, including free throw block outs and turnovers down the stretch. I thought DesiRay Kernal stepped up at the free throw line down the stretch."
