They are the first pair of UNT teammates to record double doubles in the same game since 2017
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UNT women's basketball team handed Samford its first loss of the season with a 71-59 victory in its first game of The Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic.
After starting the game missing their first seven shots from the field, the Mean Green would go on to shoot 31-of-55 (56.3%) and have four players score in double figures. Jaaucklyn Moore and DesiRay Kernal led all players with 17 each, while Tommisha Lampkin and Dyani Robinson added 13 a piece.
Getting it done scoring and on the glass, Kernal and Lampkin became the first teammates to record double doubles in the same game for North Texas since March 8, 2017. Kernal recorded her third double double of the season, one off the national lead, with the 17 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, while Lampkin had 10 boards to go with her 13 points in her first double double of the season.
After trailing 17-12 after the first quarter, the Mean Green defense stiffened up as it has all season. UNT would hold Samford without a point in the second quarter until the 4:12 mark, which allowed North Texas to go on an 8-0 run and take its first lead of the game.
Coming out of halftime with a five-point lead, the defense continued to bother the Bulldogs' offense. Over the second and third quarters combined, UNT held Samford to 22.2% shooting from the field after allowing a 58.3% mark in the first quarter.
Largely through Lampkin and Kernal's efforts, North Texas had 28 points in the paint in the second half and finished the game with a 48-18 advantage in the paint.
UNT will be back in action Saturday morning for its final game of The Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic against North Dakota at 8 a.m. CT.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
On the emphasis of getting the ball in the paint against Samford:
"We needed the ball to go in the bucket and to do that we had to get the ball into the paint. I thought whether it was man or zone we did a really good job of finding ways to get the ball there."
