Jason Burton has best start for a first-year head coach in program history
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UNT women's basketball team capped an undefeated trip to The Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic and improved to 6-1 on the season with a 71-50 win over North Dakota on Saturday.
With the win, Jason Burton passed Tina Slinker for the best start by a first-year head coach in program history. The 6-1 start also ties the best start to the season since the 2017-18 campaign.
Both teams began the game struggling from the field, but an 18-0 run for North Texas to end the first quarter gave them control of the game. Aniyah Johnson sparked the run for the Mean Green with six points, three rebounds and a steal in that stretch.
UNT had eight scorers in the first half, led by DesiRay Kernal with nine on 4-of-6 shooting.
The Mean Green would see a 39-23 halftime lead cut down to 10 points late in the third quarter. North Texas was outscored 12-9 in the quarter after holding a 136-64 advantage over their opponents in the third quarter entering the game.
North Dakota would continue to battle as it cut the North Texas lead to as small as six in the fourth quarter. However, an 11-2 run for the Mean Green sealed the victory.
Tommisha Lampkin and Johnson recorded double doubles in the win, while Kernal finished with 15 points and was one rebound shy of her fourth double double. Lampkin's 11 points and 10 rebounds gave her back-to-back double doubles for the second time in her career, while Johnson had 10 points and 10 boards in her first double double of the season and third of her career.
North Texas will be back in The Super Pit to face Pepperdine on Dec. 1 for its first home game since Nov. 9.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
Thoughts on the game:
"I'm extremely proud of our team because we got the short end of the stick as far as playing the second game yesterday then having to do recovery and prep for today's 8 a.m. game. For us to jump out early the way we did, that is what won us the game. We talked pregame about how important it was for us to get off to a fast start and we really did that."
