Football Rolls Up Nearly 600 Yards In Road Win
11/18/2023 6:16:00 PM | Football
With just under three minutes to play in a one-score game, UNT head coach Eric Morris put faith in his rushing attack on fourth-and-1 from his own 47-yard line, as Oscar Adaway III picked up three yards, a first down and the fourth win of the season for the Mean Green (4-7, 2-5 AAC).
Morris' faith in the ground game was with good reason, as UNT rolled up 299 yards on the ground to go with 294 through the air, and Adaway led the way with a career-high 126 yards, thanks to a 77-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave his team a 35-21 lead.
"We've lost five one-score games this year and I told them that this was a huge moment in us building a program," Morris said. "Was it perfect? Absolutely not, but they continued to battle and found a way to win. This will be a time we can look back on. We had a lot of young guys out there that contributed. I'm super proud of this team to go home with a win. We've been through a lot together. We've lost so many of these tight battles, so I'm super proud of the way we got it done today."
Adaway was half of a 100-yard rushing duo on Saturday, as Ayo Adeyi had his sixth 100-yard rushing day of the year, as UNT had two 100-yard rushers for the first time since Oct. 15, 2022, against LA Tech, when UNT set the school record for rushing yards in a game.
Quarterback Chandler Rogers added 56 rushing yards, including a 41-yard scoring scamper, to go with his 294 passing yards and three touchdown passes.
Rogers had two of those scoring strikes within three minutes of game time in a key stretch that started with a 25-yard acrobatic touchdown catch by freshman Landon Sides with under a minute to play in the first half that sent the teams to halftime in a 21-21 tie.
Then, less than two minutes into the second half, UNT capitalized on getting the ball to start the second half with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Rogers to Jordan Smart that gave UNT the lead.
Adaway's 77-yard touchdown followed just a few minutes later to give UNT 21 unanswered points in six minutes of game action.
UNT will close out the season at home next Saturday against UAB with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
