UNT wins Jason Burton’s debut in record-breaking fashion
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team set a new school record for points scored in a game in a 117-42 victory over UNT Dallas in its season opener on Monday inside The Super Pit.
Dyani Robinson's jumper with 22 seconds remaining surpassed the former record of 116 points that had stood since Nov. 21, 1997. The victory also marked the first victory in Jason Burton's tenure as the North Texas head coach.
The Mean Green had five players score in double figures and 12 total players score in the game. Jaaucklyn Moore led the way in points with 18 on the night, followed closely by Tommisha Lampkin who recorded 17 points and nine rebounds.
North Texas' defense played a major role in leading to points on the offensive end. UNT forced 39 turnovers total, which included 21 steals and led to 49 points off turnovers.
Several of the Mean Green posted career nights against the Trialblazers. Notably, Ereauna Hardaway, who set a career high with eight assists and tied her career high with six rebounds. Redshirt freshman Desiree Wooten was effective on both ends of the court recording 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals in her first career game.
UNT took the lead on their second possession of the game and never looked back. After jumping out to a 13-0 lead to start the game, they also went on a 17-6 run at the end of the second quarter to take a 46-17 advantage into the half.
The offense picked it up from there scoring a combined 71 points in the second half en route to the scoring record.
North Texas will be back in action inside The Super Pit Grambling State at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
On the halftime adjustment the team made:
"I'm glad we responded in the second half to play the way we are supposed to play because in the first half we didn't. We came out flat and kind of nonchalant, just expecting to win. That's not who we are. We have to be consistent with who we are, no matter the opponent. We should look the same and feel the same. I thought in the second half we responded and we showed what we're capable of doing."
